This is the forerunner to our goodbye speech, and our farewell address, our forever over reign over the greatest bunch of fools at the school. We have selected new presidents and a treasurer, but you’ll have to check the Faerie Queene to find out who. Or we can just tell you that its Harry, Walter, and Keebler.

Congratulations, the mess is now in your hands, you gotta clean it up.

Wow. March already. Third Trimester. Most importantly, First post of the New Year!

So those of you who missed the extravaganza also missed some good ol’ fashioned Winter fun, and adultery. By adultery I mean watching The Graduate.

As far as the club goes, murder, mystery, and intrigue have been the theme so far, with: Kind Hearts and Coronets, Rashomon, and On the Waterfront.

Stay tuned for more news. Who knows what’s coming up next. Its a mystery to even us.

If you didn’t recognize that quote, but you signed up for the CFC (that’s right. We may be officially called the Classic Films Club, but those on the inside know, we’re the CFC. Now those on the outside too) then your probably a mook. With that said,

I hope everyone had a nice thanksgiving break! Today we started Mean Streets (1973), it’s going to be fun.

People likely to read this will already know, but Targets was finished. Bobby was arrested in the end, after being caned by Boris Karloff (that was the classic part).

Interspersed between then and now were The Perfect Crime (2004), which some argue was not a classic film and others that it was practically pornography, and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

We are now on La Grande Illusion, a film Jean Renoir, son of Renoir the painter. It’s a surreal look at the veil of civility that covered the true brutality of WWI. Trust me, it’s interesting, come see it. I’ll leave it up to the other presidents to actually tell what the movie is about.

For all of you who didn’t see the end, it turns out that Cary Grant was a super undercover agent, and Hamilton Bartholomew who we though was a CIA agent turned out to actually be Carson Dyle, responsible for the deaths of all the other Paratrooper gold hiders. I don’t remember completely, but the gold couldn’t be found because it was exchanged for extremely rare stamps, which ended up in the possession of the little water pistol boy, who traded them away to a collector, who was happy to give them back to Audrey Hepburn, who in turn brings them back to Cary Grant who she plans to marry, and have male children so he can jokingly name them after all of his identities. Without a doubt, that was a run-on sentence.

Next Week, Thursday the 11th, we will be starting Targets (1968), Peter Bogdanovich’s first film, a true American masterpiece that has endured time. It a thriller which keeps you on the edge of your seat till the end, while still being a cinematic masterpiece. It has a great set up for how it was made that makes the film even better:
Roger Corman told Peter Bogdanovich he could make any film he wanted to, with two conditions: he had to use stock footage from The Terror (1963), and he had to hire Boris Karloff for two days (Karloff was under contract and owed Corman those two days). Karloff was so impressed with the script that he refused pay for any shooting time over his contracted two days.

-Your Club Presidents

So we had our first meeting (finally) on the 27th. Thanks to all those who came (even if only for a minute). We watched the first half of Charade, and it was great! We’ve concluded that Audrey Hepburn has a strange neck (Jeff), Cary Grant is NOT that great looking (Jeff), and James Coburn is awesome (Jeff).

The next meeting is on the 1st of October, barring some sort of crisis (like a important college meeting where they reiterate the importance of getting in our Common Apps). For those of you not good with dates (like me) that’s next Monday. Did you know there are only 30 days in September? Anyways, it’ll be great fun. We’ll be finishing Charade (hopefully). I can’t wait for the end (although if Lambert is actually alive, I will be really annoyed).

Due to Upper Division meetings today, and Rosh Hashanah on Thursday, there will be no clubs this week.

Next Monday we will be watching Charade (1963). Its a great film with lots of unexpected twists. From IMDB:

Regina Lambert returns to Paris from a ski holiday in Switzerland to find that her husband has been murdered. She is later told by CIA agent Hamilton Bartholemew that Charles Lambert was one of five men who stole $250,000 in gold from the U.S. government during World War II, and the government wants it back. The money was not found among his possessions, and Regina can shed no light on its whereabouts. Later that day she is visited by Peter Joshua, whom she had met briefly while on holiday. When her husband’s former partners in crime, who were double-crossed by Charles, start calling her looking for the money, Peter offers to help find it. Thus begins an elaborate charade in which nothing is what it seems to be.

Our site will offer a few features. Firstly we will give a heads up of what movies we will be watching up to a week in advance. On the side the site will also feature reviews of the movies we have watched, and can serve as a forum of discussion for club members.

In the past we have tried to make a site, but failed due to hosting problems. WordPress is a simple and cheap solution, and its registry and user system will allow for easier modification and collaboration by all members.
